Definition of "Short Position"

A situation whereby an investor borrows stock certificates for delivery at the time of the short sale. Should the seller be able to sell the stock at a price lower than the borrowed cost, a profit is made. Conversely if the sale price is above the borrowed value, a loss is incurred.
